Hi, I just dropped in looking for information for a young friend of my youngest son. I havent seen him since last year, knew he was going a round or two with cocaine and other things. I was shocked to see him tonight. He has lost alot of weight. He was candid with me about having stopped using. He had obviously been drinking alot and was more than willing to talk...I am looking for information that I can pass onto him via email links etc....information on detox. He admitted to smoking crack and doing oxy. His biggest symptoms are that he has no appitite and he cannot sleep. He was a star wrestler in high school, is working and going to school full time. To complicate matters he was diagnoised with Mono two years ago and it is still hanging on....crap.
Can you help me find any info online to hand to this kid. Short of calling his parents (he lives with them- extremely religious folks), I want to add some credibility to my own experience with cocaine detox years ago.
Anything you can do to help would be appreciated.

Hi Joan Marie,
Maybe what you're looking for are the medical effects that cocaine has on people? Im not an expert but what i recall hearing from my cocaine days was that using coke floods your brain with 'dopamine'. Then when you come down (or try to stop) youre sitting there dopamine depleted. Being in that state you crave more of the drug to feel 'happy' or 'excited' about things again.
I hope that makes a little sense.. I think you could Google cocaine, dopamine and get a more detailed, medical explanation as to why its so hard to quit. It seems that young people who have no knowledge of coke's effect on the brain are in a cycle of chasing that 'feel good' feeling without knowing there are very solid underlying medical reasons for the cravings.
Then of course there are the whole psychological aspects of escaping, etc. Recovery. You could look up cocaine, recovery as well.
Hope that helps. PM me if you want to chat about it. I get busy and forget to come up to the satellite forums, e.g. benzos, cocaine, etc.
Take care.
Lisa

Good Morning All,
Hoping you find this day at your best. I must admit I thought this thread was going to be about detoxing from cocaine ;) And of course that brought to mind Narconon. So I gooogled it/them. Boy Aren't they getting some bad press. You never here anyone slandering AA/NA because of their (non)affiliation with religion. But being that the founder of Narconon is also the founder of Scientology what else could be expected. I am surprised I had not heard of the conection prior to this. Anyway, detoxing......fortunately for us cocaine has a rather short half life and is water soluble. So that the bulk of which is expelled within a few days. Now there are those who argue in Narconon fashion that the metabolites of the drug do become stored in our bodies for a considerably longer period. And they suggest that as the body does what the body does these metabolitews are released and cause our triggers and cravings. So appearently the thing to do is increase your metabolism through exercise, drink plenty of fluids, and enjoy suanas for that extra boost of waste removal through sweating. Please do not forget to eat a healthy diet, get plenty of rest and remember to thank those responsible for the good things in your life.
Regards, Larrylive |

PPS in reference to raising your metabolism...and this is sure to ruffle some feathers. I have had this sneaking suspicion for a while but have kept it to myself. But the other day I was reading some essays by Isaac Asimov (cool Asimov and Hubbard in the same thread) and he was talking about heartbeats, and mammals and relative size and life expectancy. Anyway it seems we (people) all get about the same number of beats. I don't know if that means live slow, live long. But I have notice you don't see alot of "athletes" hitting the 100yr mark. At least not on willard Scotts Birthday list. Food for thought.
